Media representation
For this week, I will be watching some videos on media representation. There are some videos that I will be watching, and after I watch these videos, I will give my thoughts on what they are all about.
Video 1 Why Representation Matters
This first video generally talks about representation and why it matters so much, and a needed change. In the video, you have people of different backgrounds, different colours and people of different genders talking about why there needs to be a change in the digital media world of representation, like other stories to be told as a way for people of those different backgrounds, different colours and different genders to watch the content that is happening so that they can resonate with. A way to tackle this issue is to hire people from different cultures to be a creator and let them tell their own story or a story that they know of people that is around them. Have more people of colour in the same room, directing and creative writers.
My thoughts- Video 1
I like the video. I like how it's quick and short. I do agree with the points made in this video like having a change of letting people of different colours make be able to be a creator of their own story by shooting on camera for the world to see who they are, where they came from and what they do for a living. I was surprised by how white people and straight people are always brought up and shown on camera more than other colours like its 2021, and I thought things would be different, as explained in the video itself. It would be interesting to see that happen to explore the stories of who the people are, from different backgrounds, all the stories they can tell or maybe discovering the cultures they have been brought upon. It would be interesting to see that and learn more as it would be an excellent way to learn.
Video 2 Representation theory explained
This video its talking about the representation theory and what it is. Representation theory represents reality from social group events, places and anything. It talks about how these representations are against reality itself. In the video, he talks about important people in the media and how the media represents those critical people. This can range from the president of a country, a music artist or movie director that could imply those groups of people could have fixed meanings against which accuracy can be measured. This saying is proven to be false by a man called Stuart Hall and can be established with the story of Brexit. There are a lot of facts about Brexit, like who went to specific meetings and what countries thought about Brexit itself. The concept conceptually doesn’t affect the real world until it has been covered and represented by the media who give meaning to these events that happen around the world that can give a positive representation of Brexit. Newspaper agencies tend to do this painting it as a positive or negative review.
My thoughts- video 2
For this video, I was not too fond of it. It was too long, and we talked about political figures in the world that we live in. I'm not into the politics of the world. It doesn’t interest me like I know it’s essential to understand, but when I research something like this, it tends to be uninteresting at times. It’s my own opinion. Everyone has their opinion that's fine, but for me, I tend to tune out on these topics as it can be boring at times.
