Media ethics

For this week, i will be reviewing some videos on Media ethics.

Video 1

The first video, it's coming from a YouTube channel called minisode who talks and explain what the medium is the message?. He talks about a quote from understanding media it says “This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium - that is, of any extension of ourselves - result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves…” it is explained in the video that the mediums have a more significant impact on the fundamental shape and nature of society, for example, electric light, car, train and aeroplane have restructured the ideas of what cites would look like day and night. This would also apply to the radio and television as it would help reshape and build our houses. Unfortunately, McLuhan, who had written the quote from earlier, had died in 1980 and had not lived long enough to see the internet today. Still, we can use his selection to test out the things we have today, like the amount of YouTube videos ever made, the YouTube platform itself or the mobile phone itself.

Video 2

The second video is an explanation of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which took place in 2018. The video itself explains who they are. Which they are known as a data marketing firm that uses the data to change the audience behaviour. However, a whistleblower has come forward to tell the world what is happening in data marketing itself. The whistleblower is named Christopher Wylie and goes on to explain the CEO Alexander Nix who expects people to follow his orders and says a lot of things such as “working for the pentagon and MI6”, also saying he’s brilliant at everything and “you should trust me with your money.” Christopher would later explain that the company is tracking peoples profiles on Facebook, collecting their data without their permission, and people wouldn’t be notified of their activity. He would later say that “The company itself was founded on using Facebook data.”

Video 3

The third video elations the use of dark patterns on the internet. It is designed to trick users into doing things they might not want to do at all. The video is by a YouTube channel called the Nerdwriter1, which is on the amazon website trying to close down his accounts with amazon. He goes onto the site, goes to the settings, goes to his account, and there is not a single link leading to a delete an account page. So instead, he goes down to the bottom of the page and clicks help, goes to more support, he then goes to contact us which he does say that it gets ridiculous at this point, he is then at a page giving him four options which he clicks on prime or something else. Then you have to click on a dropdown called login and security and then finally close your account. However, the video explains that it is impossible to delete the account as you must have a chat with amazon itself telling you it's a bad idea to delete the account which tells you that its a crap experience.

My thoughts

  • My thoughts on the amazon video was i think its stupid that amazon does that you should be able to close an account with them and not take serveral steps to do so and not be dealing with the amazon service online if i want to close my account with them i shouldn’t have them decide for me as its my own choice.
  • The company that was taking information from Facebook profiles without the users knowing is a violation of privacy and it is just wrong and should not be happening.

  1. Hi Robert, I have just finished reading your blog post! I thought you did a great job. I found it to be full of interesting facts, providing us with quotes and sources which helped me gain knowledge but also showed the work you have put in to complete your task. You gave a numerous amount of examples however I was looking for more of your own opinion. I see you wrote it on the bottom of the page but personally, I think if you put your opinions into your information on the video and combine this, it will help the paragraphs to flow and give more of an entertaining debate for your readers.

I like how you put the videos in order making it easier for the reader to access it quickly without any fuss. I enjoyed your use of image as it gives a sense of entertainment. Overall I found this blog to be a great insight into media ethics and couldn't fault too much as I believe you did a brilliant job.

  2. Hi Robert,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading you blog post. It was interesting, engaging and easy to read. The overall structure is built fantastically, the way yoused subheadings to encapsulate each paragraph. I especially was interested by the closing paragraph, your own personal thoughts. It easily sums up the points you have made to rapidly remind the reader what they have just been reading about.
I found the language used was very digestable and that made the blog intensely infomative. The mix of formal and coloquial language makes the text so much more engaging to read as it doesnt feel the reader is reading recited percise language.
Your use of quotes when talking about video two were very effective and really depicted the characteristics of Wylie. I also found that the quotations being in bold was very helpful and made them easy to pick out and reference back to.
It is clear from your blog post that you have a thorough understanding of media ethics and have formulated strong opinions on them which is good to see.
    Good work!

  3. Hi Robert,
I read your blog post and I really enjoyed it! I like the way you made a simple structure of the ideas you gathered in the videos without adding complications to it as well as the language you used was easily to understand. It's engaging the reader's attention without needing to use of fancy words. I appreciate that you added quotes from the source where you got the information. I genuinely think you understood the ideas from the videos though, I would've liked to see more your opinion about those, a bit more explanation about why you think that way.

I appreciate also the fact that you added the links in order which makes it really easy to find the original information. I really liked your blog post! Well done!

  4. Hi Robert!
I just finished reading your blog post, and I really enjoyed it! I think that the layout of your blog is great as it is nicely divided into paragraphs which made it easier to read. As well as that, you included various quotes to expand on your facts, which I really liked and thought that it was a nice addition to the first two paragraphs of your blog.
You’ve left all of the links to your sources at the bottom of your blog post, which I found to be very helpful as I got to know where you had gathered your information from.
However, I was looking for a little bit more of your own opinion throughout the blog. You’ve included some bits of your own opinion at the very end, but I think that it could be nicely incorporated into the paragraphs themselves as it would make it a little easier to read.
Overall, I think you did a great job! :)

  5. Hey Robert, after reading your blog i can see that you have but a lot of effort into the structure and information provided for this blog. Your layout is quality and highlights that you have a good understanding of the topic you are discussing in the blog. Your segregation of key points paragraph by paragraph is excellent and allows for a nice flow throughput the read.

You have referenced and all videos perfectly which for me as a reader would benefit as me I usually like to delve deeper into the topic or discussion I am researching. overall the read was nothing short of great. You clearly have a good grasp of an understand for the specific topic as it shows clearly in your work.

If I was to fault it on anything it would be more inclusion of your own opinion would only benefit your overall work, good job.

  6. Hey Robert, I just finished reading your blog and I'll be honest I was very impressed with the amount of effort and information you included in the blog based on the topic you were writing about. I liked the way you structured your words together and how you added a quote to support your answer between each paragraph in your blog. For each paragraph you wrote for your blog was for every video that you watched for that week's task and I was very impressed with the way you explained it in deeper detail.

While reading your opinions below especially the one when you were saying something based on people needing to contact amazon to delete their own accounts was very impressive and well detailed. In my opinion if people can give their own opinion at the very end of each blog they do then it can give readers more to think about on how they can implement this type of writing style and critical thinking into their own work.
