Active Reading

Introduction

My name is Robert Finegan, and I’m a student currently that I have been reading a paper called a Journal of Reading by Ernest Balajthy, which at the time it was published by the International Literacy Association and Wiley in February 1984.

It would have been challenging back then, especially for critical reading, because some information could be outdated. You would only have access to the library, where is today you would now have access to the internet. The paper is mainly aimed at students explaining how they can improve their reading and writing abilities. For questioning using learning, activity is not as valuable as the author would think as I saw under the bold subheading paragraph it would probably be better if the student would act as a teacher and have a discussion of the reading selection the other way would be a competition a group competition divided into two or more groups and have them answer the other group's questions on a piece, if a student cannot answer a question then the next person from the other group is next to answer the question. Another way would be to close the book and ask students the particular section to see if he is right.

Thoughts

The most helpful thing that I have used while reading long paragraphs was to watch for formatting text like bold, underlines, bullet points and subheadings. Other ways have helped me construct my tests, like what type of questions will be asked, and I can use it as a study mechanism. The challenge of this paper is that it has long sections, so I was there for a good while, skimming through the paragraphs to find the correct information that I needed. It has too much information that should probably not be there in the first place. I would’ve preferred to be fewer long paragraphs and have the correct information there. It would’ve been easier for me to read through as I feel like it's too much information. I have struggled with it and wish to be shorter. That way, it would be more apparent to me as I would know what to do in this situation what I have to do.

However, I found that active reading can be helpful at times, especially when it comes to some underlined words and bold words that could be important, so it wasn’t all that bad.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this blog post on active reading and reading your thoughts on it I liked the layout of it that you had your introduction and then a separate section for your thoughts and that it feels more personal because you said what works best for you and not just talking about exactly what you read and it was more your own opinions on the piece. The only thing I would say would be to add a picture relavent to the blog but besides that I really enjoyed your blog and thought it was well written and intresting to read.
